bio
Jonathan Schouela is an artist and curator based in Montréal.
He holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in
New York City. His multidisciplinary practice moves between
sculpture, textiles, painting, installation, and
exhibition-making, exploring the relationships between
material, form, perception, and cultural meaning.
Drawing on an eclectic range of influences, his work
engages with esoteric subjects, obscure histories,
popular culture, design, architecture, and the decorative
arts. Through experimentation with materials, techniques,
and modes of presentation, he explores the intersections
of the familiar and the strange, the functional and the
symbolic, and the historical and the contemporary.
His curatorial practice extends these interests through
the creation of spaces for artistic experimentation and
exchange. He founded Family, a pop-up
gallery conceived as a flexible platform for exhibitions
and collaborations, and subsequently established
Carrefour, a contemporary art gallery
in Montréal. Across these initiatives, his curatorial
approach embraces unexpected affinities, unconventional
perspectives, and dialogue between diverse artistic
practices.
For Schouela, artistic production and curation are
interconnected activities, both offering opportunities
to assemble disparate ideas, objects, and histories
into new relationships. His work has been exhibited
at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC)
and Artexte.
